Transgender Voice Modification

Our voice is how we share who we are with the world. It is uniquely individual and makes us distinctly recognizable to others. When a person’s voice does not match their gender identity, it can profoundly impact all aspects of their life. For those individuals, voice therapy, also called transgender voice modification, can help transgender and non-binary people to change various aspects of their voice to match their identity. At Mosaic Speech Therapy, voice therapy aims to reduce how often a trans person is misgendered by modifying voice characteristics and subtle gender cues through verbal and nonverbal communication. Voice therapy sessions focus on feminizing or masculinizing an individual’s voice and communication as a means of affirming their gender identity. This is accomplished by modifying pitch, resonance, intonation, loudness, and articulation, while ensuring that vocal health and hygiene practices are followed to protect against injury.
